Pinisi, Paotere Harbour,
Makassar, Sulawesi

Anyone who reads books by Joseph Conrad should find this harbour of special interest. Makassar, and people sailing to & from Makassar, occur several times in his books.

Pinisi, Paotere Harbour, Makassar, Sulawesi, c.1994
This photograph from 1993 shows that Pinisi have sails furled and top masts. The following shots from 2012
and 2014 show the occasional furled sail and top mast, but not many.

Small boats and houses at Paotere, Dec. 2012. - Pan to the right, its another very wide photograph.

This shot from Bira shows the difference between the old sailing Pinisi and the modern Pinisi.
I assume the small boat has been recently made to a traditional design.

Pinisi Bira, South Sulawesi, 2012
This boat has so little in the water I am amazed it is stable, and if those top masts were raised the stability
would be worse. Is the boat being kept upright by those 'legs' that appear to be attached to the side of the boat?

Ship, Harbour mouth at Paotere, Makassar, 2014
It looked sunk to me, but they like to load the boats until the are low in the water.

Pinisi rudder arrangement, Paotere, Makassar, 2012
Every time I look at this rudder I wonder if this is a rudder or acts as a keel extension
and how it is controlled. Is there a normal rudder underwater behind the propeller?
